People & Environment

Environmental governance grounded in lived experience — from smog-belt Punjab to flood-vulnerable Sindh to the glacier-fed north. We produce assessments, district-level data and policy advocacy for an environmental transition that is both ecologically serious and socially just.

What this focus area covers.

Each focus area is structured around four to six durable sub-themes — research questions that recur and need consistent, longitudinal evidence rather than one-off studies.

Sub-theme 1

Air quality & pollution

District-level PM2.5 exposure, smog-belt geography, the political economy of seasonal burning, and the public-health consequences. Open data and citizen-facing dashboards.

Sub-theme 2

Water stress & governance

Inter-provincial water sharing, groundwater depletion, urban water access, and the institutional architecture of irrigation. Mixed-methods work on contested basins.

Sub-theme 3

Climate vulnerability

District-level vulnerability mapping, flood and drought exposure, and the population-level economic consequences of climate shock.

Sub-theme 4

Just-transition policy

Coal phase-down, agricultural transition, and the workforce implications of decarbonisation. Who pays, who benefits, and how the bill is shared.
